The Old Curiosity Shop and the Lone Trifle

You know, you can't really go wrong with this one on Valentine's Day, can you? The 2 of Cups is a card of emotional partnerships, as well as one of friendship, so seemed pretty fitting for today.

I got up early and walked to town. God, it was cold today, so I wrapped up warm, all in black, and sauntered through the shops for a bit before meeting my friend, Kate. Because the water at home had to be turned off, I got dressed early and didn't see the point of sitting around, so was out amongst the hustle and bustle far earlier than I actually needed to be. I fingered my way through the shelves of the bookstores and flipped through the tarot section. I couldn't really afford to buy anything, but started looking through Josephine Ellershaw's 'Easy Tarot Reading'. After fifteen minutes of reading one of her sample tarot readings, I took it to the till. I still had a good hour and a half before I had to meet Kate, so bought it to take to a coffee shop and sat by the window, reading. I have her Easy Tarot companion for the Gilded Tarot and like her clear approach to the cards, so was interested in what she had to say in this sequel. I have never completely got a grip on the old Celtic Cross Spread and she presents two new spreads within her pages (used together) which seemed more suited to me. One uses just the majors and the other, which comprises 21 cards, uses both arcanas, which requires you to use two decks for a reading. Now I can see how that all sounds a bit too much, but when I got home and laid out the sample cards from the book examples and read along, it was actually very enlightening. I had a go at doing one for myself and was surprised by how much easier it was to read than the Celtic Cross I had been getting stuck with for so many years. The new spreads reminded me a little of those I had used with playing cards.

Kate and I started off with coffee and chats, since we haven't seen each other in a few weeks. We then dawdled through a few vintage shops and found a different cafe for something to eat and more of the same. She reminds me of myself in some ways. With every meet, we talk about those things we've always wanted to do, but both head off into crazy jobs and careers that we cannot handle instead, time and again. We did the same again today. We both have the same dream of owning a shop together by the sea, selling bits of this and that which we have found and tarted up. She has been on a few tarot courses and is interested in the same kinds of things as I am. If we had a shop, it would be one of those old curiosity ones. A little like the one that Mr Ben used to disappear out the back of.

I had planned on picking up one of those Valentine meal deals for my boyfriend and I this evening. Nothing too special. Just one of those deals they advertise, where you spent twenty quid and get a few courses, some chocolates and a bottle of bubbly. When I got to good old Marks & Spencer, most of the stuff had gone and I wasn't particularly seduced by the lone trifle sitting on the bottom shelf like Billy No Mates, so I gave up on that idea. Instead, my boyfriend picked up a Chinese on the way to mine this evening. For the same price, we had a proper meal, rather than a desert the size of a boiled egg and a few pieces of broccoli, loosely disguised as a side. We lay on my bed and watched television. After complaining about his raise to his boss, my boyfriend heard that the company had reconsidered and doubled it. This doesn't change how he feels about his job though, and he has heard that he has an interview for a different one next week. Generally, he seemed in a really good mood this evening; or at least, in a better mood than either of us were at the weekend. He has been on a diet and is eating well too and I could see the changes in his face as he lay beside me. Tonight felt good and I really enjoyed his company, which is just what I would have expected from a day that lays beneath the shadow of the relationship-friendly 2 of Cups.
